Note return to page 1 Wroughton's adaptation of RICHARD II was written as a vehicle for Edmund Kean, who performed the role of Richard with considerable success from 1815 onwards: it was last revived in 1828. Although it cuts the Aumerle plot, it follows Theobald's 1719 adaptation in expanding the role of the Queen, who at the close of the play laments over Richard's body in lines borrowed from the then disused tragic ending of KING LEAR.
