CHAPTER XI.


1   Soðlice wæs geworden þa he wæs on sumere stowe hine gebiddende. þa þa he geswac. him to cwæð an his leorning-cnihta; Drihten. lædia;r &udia;s. us gebiddan. swa iohannes his leorning-cnihtas lærde;


2   Ða cwæþ he to him. cweðað þus. þonne ge eow gebiddað; Ure fæder þu ðe on heofone eart. si þin nama gehalgod t&odia;-cume þin r&idia;ce. gewurðe ðin willa on heofone ∧ on eorþan.


3   syle us to-dæg urne dæg-hwamlican hl&adia;f.

4   ∧ forgyf us ure gyltas. swa we forgyfað ælcum þara þe wið us agyltað. ∧ ne læd þu us on costunge. ac al&ydia;s &udia;s fram yfele;


5   Ða cwæþ he to him; noteHwylc eower hæfð sumne freond. ∧ gæþ to midre nihte to him. ∧ cwyð to him; La freond lædia;n me þry hlafas.


6   For-þam m&idia;n freond com of w&edia;ge to me. ∧ ic næbbe hwæt ic him to-foran lecge;


7   And he þonne him þus ∧swarige. ne beo þu me gram nu min duru is belocen. ∧ mine cnihtas synt on reste mid me. ne mæg ic ar&idia;san n&udia; ∧ syllan þe;


8   Gyf he þonne þurh-wunað cnucigiende. ic eow secge gyf he [ne] arist ∧ him sylð þonne forþam þe he his freond ys. þeah-hwæþere for hys onhrope he arist ∧ sylð him his neode;


9   And ic eow secge. biddað. ∧ eow byð seald. secað. ∧ ge findað. cnuciað. ∧ eow byð untyned.


10   ælc þara þe bitt onfehð. ∧ se ðe secð he fint. ∧ cnuciendum byð untyned;


11   Hwylc eower bitt his fæder hlafes. segst þu sylð he him st&adia;n. oððe gif he byt fisces sylð he him næddran for fisce.


12   oððe gyf he bit ædia;g. segst þu ræcð he him scorpionem. &thaet; is an wyrm-cynn.

19   Gif ic on bel-zebub deofla ut-dr&idia;fe. on hwam ut-adrifað eower bearn. forþam hig beoð eowere d&edia;man;


20   Gewislice gif ic on godes fingre deofla ut-adr&idia;fe. eallunga godes r&idia;ce on eow be-cymð;


21   Ðonne se stranga gewæpnud his cafertun gehealt. þonne beoð on sibbe þa ðing þe he ah;


22   Gyf þonne strengra ofer hine cymð. ∧ hine ofer-winð. ealle his wæpnu þe he on truwude he him afyrð. ∧ to-dælþ his here-reaf;


23   Se þe nis mid me se is ongen me; And se þe ne gaderað mid me. se hit tostret;

24   Ðonne se un-clæna gast gæð of þam men. he gæð þurh un-wæterie st&odia;wa reste secende ∧ nane ne gemet þonne cwyð he; Ic gewende eft to m&idia;num huse þe ic of eode.


25   ∧ þænne he cymð. he hit gemet æmtig mid besmum afeormod;


26   Þonne gæð he ∧ nimð seofan oðre gastas wyrsan þonne he ∧ ingað. ∧ þar eardiað. þonne synt þæs mannes endas wyrsan þam ærrum;


27   Soðlice wæs geworden þa he ðis sædia;de. sum w&idia;f him to cwæþ; Eadig is se innoð þe þe bær. ∧ þa breost þe ðu suce;


28   Ða cwæð he. eadige synt þa ðe godes word ge-hyrað ∧ &thaet; ge-healdaþ;


29   Ða hyra manega to-gædere comon he cwæþ to him; Ðeos cneorys is manfull cneorys. heo secð tacen. ∧ hyre ne bið n&adia;n geseald buton Ionan tacen;


30   Swa swa iona wæs tacen niniuetum. swa bið mannes sunu tacen þisse cneorisse;


31   Suð-dæles cw&edia;n arist on dome mid þisse cneorysse mannum ∧ genyðerað hig forþam þe heo com of eorðan endum to gehyranne salomones wisdom; And efne þes is m&adia;ra þonne salomon;

34   Ðin eage is þines lichaman leoht-fæt; Gif þin eage bið hluttor ðonne bið eall þin lichama beorht; Gif hit byð deorc. eall þin lichama byð þystre;


35   Warna &thaet; &thaet; leoht þe ðe on is. ne syn þystru;


36   Gyf þin lichama eall bið beorht and næfþ nanne dæl þystra þonne byð he eall beorht. ∧ þe on-lyht swa &thaet; leoht-fæt þæs lig-ræsces;


37    note Þa bæd hine sum fariseisc man &thaet; he ædia;te mid him ∧ he ineode ∧ sæt;


38   Ða ongan se fariseisca on him smeagan ∧ cweðan; Hwi he ge-þwogen nære ær his gereorde;


39   Ða cwæð drihten to him nu ge farisei &thaet; ute is calices ∧ disces geclænsiað &thaet; eow innan is. &thaet; is full reaf-lace ∧ unriht-wisnesse;


40   La dysegan hu ne worhte &thaet; &thaet; inne is. se ðe worhte &thaet; &udia;te is.


41   þeah-hwæþere &thaet; to lafe is syllað ælmessan þonne beoð eow ealle þing clædia;ne;


42   Ac w&adia; eow fariseum ge þe teoþiað mintan ∧ r&udia;dan. ∧ ælce wyrte ∧ ge for-bugað d&odia;m ∧ godes lufe; Þas þing eow gebyrede to donne. ∧ þa þing ne for-lætan;

45   Ða ∧swarode him sum ægleaw. lareow teonan þu wyrhcst us mid þisse sage;


46   Þa cwæþ he; Wa eow ægleawum forþam þe ge symað men mid þam byrþenum þe hig aberan ne magon. ∧ ge ne ahrinað þa seamas mid eowrum anum fingre;


47   Wa eow ge þe timbriað witegena byrgena. eower fæderas hig of-sl&odia;gon


48   eallunga ge cyðað. ∧ ge þafiað eower fædera weorcum. forþam hig ofslogon hig. ∧ ge timbriað hira byrgena;


49   Forþam cwæð godes wisd&odia;m. ic sende to him witegan ∧ apostolas. ∧ hig of-sleað hig. ∧ ehtað


50   &thaet; ealra witegena blod sy ge-soht. þe wæs agoten of middan-geardes fruman. fram þisse cneorysse.


51   fram abeles blode oð zachariam blod. se forwearð betux þam altare ∧ þam temple. ic eow secge. swa bið ge-soht fram þisse cneorysse;


52   Wa eow ægleawum for-þam þe ge ætbrudun þæs ingehydes cæge. ge in ne eodun ∧ ge forbudon þa þe in-eodun;

53   Ða he him þis to cwæð. þa ongunnun ða farisei ∧ þa ægleawan hefilice him agen standan ∧ his muð dyttan
