Note return to page 1 At the time Tate's adaptation appeared, in 1680, Charles II was experiencing such political difficulties that no play depicting the feasibility of deposing an English king could possibly be tolerated, and despite Tate's attempt to circumvent censorship by giving all his characters Italian names and retitling the play THE SICILIAN USURPER it was successfully suppressed.

Note return to page 2 *Epst. Ded. to the Span. Fryar.
