NOTES ON St. PAUL's Epistle to the PHILIPPIANS. Philippi was so called from Philip King of Macedonia, who much inlarged and beautified it. Afterwards it became a Roman Colony, and the chief City of that Part of Macedonia. Hither St. Paul was sent by a Vision to preach; and here, not long after his Coming, he was shamefully intreated. Nevertheless many were converted by him, during the short time of his Abode there: by whose Liberality he was more assisted, than by any other Church of his Planting. And they had now sent large Assistance to him by Epaphraditus; by whom he returns them this Epistle. It contains Six Parts,
I.The Inscription,C. i.1, 2.
II.Thanksgiving and Prayers for them,3—11.
III.He relates his present State and good Hope:12—24.
Whence he exhorts them,
1.While he remains with them, to walk worthy of the Gospel,25—30.
C ii.1—16.
2.Though he should be killed, to rejoice with him,17, 18.
And promises,
1.To certify them of all things by Timotheus,19—24.
2.In the mean time to send Epaphroditus,25—30.
IV.He exhorts them to rejoice,C. iii.1—3.
admonishing them, to beware of false Teachers, and to imitate the True,2—21.
commending Concord,C. iv.1—3.
He again exhorts them to Joy and Meekness,4—7.
and to whatsoever things are excellent,8, 9.
V.He accepts of their Liberality,10—20.
VI.The Conclusion,21—23.
PHILIPPIANS. Chap. I.

1   Paul and Timotheus, the servants note of Jesus Christ, to all the saints17Q0356 who are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons, 2   Grace be unto you, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

-- --

3    4   I thank my God upon every mention of you, Always in all my prayers making supplication for you all with joy, note 5   For your fellowship in the gospel, from the first day until now: note 6   Being persuaded note of this very thing, that he who hath begun a good work in you, will perfect it until the day of Jesus Christ, 7   As it is right for me to think this of you all, note because I have you in my heart, who were all partakers of my grace, both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel. 8   For God is my witness, how I long for you all, with the bowels of Jesus Christ. note 9   And this I pray, that your love note may abound yet more and more, in all knowledge and in all spiritual sense, 10   That ye may try note the things that are excellent, that ye may be sincere and without offence unto the day of Christ, 11   Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are through Christ Jesus, to the glory and praise of God. note

-- --

12   Now I would have you know, brethren, that the things concerning me note have fallen out rather to the furtherance of the gospel: 13   So that my bonds in Christ note have been made manifest in the whole palace, and to all others: 14   And many note of the brethren trusting in the Lord through my bonds, are more abundantly bold to speak the word without fear. 15   Some indeed note preach Christ even through envy and strife; but some through good will. 16   The one preach Christ out of contention, note not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds: 17   But the others out of love, note knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel. 18   What then? still every way, whether in pretence note or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yea, and will rejoice. 19   For I know that this shall turn to my salvation, note through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ: 20   According to my earnest expectation and hope, that I shall be ashamed in nothing, but that with all boldness, as always, note so now also, Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. 21    22   For to me to live is Christ, note and to die is gain. But if note I am to live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour, and what I should chuse, I know not. 23   For I am in a strait between two, having a desire

-- --

to depart note and to be with Christ, for it is far better. 24   But to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. 25   And being persuaded of this, I know note that I shall remain and continue with you all, for your furtherance and joy of faith: 26   That your rejoicing for me may abound through Christ Jesus, by my presence with you again. 27   Only note let your behaviour be worthy the gospel of Christ, that whether I come and see you, or be absent, I may hear concerning you, that ye stand fast, in one spirit, with one soul striving together for the faith of the gospel, 28   And in nothing terrified by your adversaries, which note is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation. 29   This also is of God. For to you it is given, note with regard to Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him: 30   Having the same note conflict, which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.

1   If there be then any consolation note in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies; Fulfil ye my joy, 2   that ye think the same thing, note having the same love, being of one soul, of one mind. 3   Do nothing through strife or vain-glory, note but in lowliness of mind, esteem each the others better than themselves. 4   Look not every one at his own things, note but every one also at the things of others. 5   Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus, 6   Who being in the note form of God, thought it not robbery to be

-- --

equal with God; 7   Yet note emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. 8   And being found in fashion as a man, note he humbled himself, becoming obedient even unto death, yea, the death of the cross. 9   Wherefore note God also hath highly exalted him, and hath given him a name which is above every name, 10   That at the name of Jesus every knee note might bow, of those in heaven, and those on earth, and those under the earth: 11   And every tongue note might confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord in the glory of God the Father. 12   Wherefore, note my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13   For it is God note that worketh in you according to his good

-- --

pleasure, both to will and to do. 14   Do all things note without murmurings and disputings: 15   That ye may be blameless note and simple, the sons of God, unrebukable, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world, 16   Holding fast the word of life, that I may glory in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain. 17   Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy and rejoice with you all. note 18   For the same cause joy ye likewise, and rejoice with me. note 19   Now I trust in the Lord Jesus, to send Timotheus to you shortly, that I also may be encouraged, when I know note your state. 20   For I have none note like-minded, who will naturally care for what concerneth you. 21   For all note seek their own, not the things of Christ. 22   But ye know the proof of him, that as a son with his father, note he hath served with me in the gospel. 23   Him therefore I hope to send, as soon as ever I know how it will go with me. 24   But I trust in the Lord, that I also myself shall come shortly. 25   Yet I thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, note my brother and companion in labour and fellow-soldier, but your messenger, and him that ministered to my need. 26   For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, note because ye had heard that he was sick. 27   He was indeed sick nigh unto death; but God

-- --

had mercy on him; note and not on him only, but on me likewise, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. 28   I have sent him therefore the more willingly, that ye seeing him again may rejoice, and that I also may be the less sorrowful. note 29   Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness, and honour such. 30   Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his own life, to supply your deficiency of service note toward me.

1   Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things note to you is not tedious to me, and it is safe for you. 2   Beware of dogs, note beware of evil-workers, 3   beware of the concision, For we note are the circumcision, who worship God in the spirit, and glory in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. 4   Though I note might have confidence: if any man think that he may have confidence in the flesh, I more: Circumcised the eighth day, note 5   of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews, touching the law, a Pharisee; Touching zeal, 6   persecuting the church, touching the righteousness, which is by the law, blameless. note 7   But note whatsoever things were gain to me, those I have accounted loss for Christ. 8   Yea doubtless, and I account note all things to be loss, for the excellency of the knowledge of Jesus Christ my Lord; for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do account them but

-- --

dung, 9   that I may gain Christ, And be found note in him, not having my own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith: 10   That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable to his death: note 11   If by any means I may attain unto the resurrection of the dead. note 12   Not that I have already attained, note or am already perfected: but I pursue, if I may apprehend that, for which I was also apprehended by Christ Jesus. 13   Brethren, I do not account myself to have apprehended. note 14   But one thing I do, forgetting the things that are behind, note and reaching forth unto the things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. 15   Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, note be thus minded; and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal

-- --

even this unto you. 16   But note whereunto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing. 17   Brethren, be ye followers together of me, and mark them note who walk so as ye have us for an example. 18   (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, note that they are enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, note 19   whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame; 20   who mind earthly things) For our conversation note is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21   Who will transform our vile body, note that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, acccording to the mighty working, whereby he is able even to subject all things to himself.

1   Therefore, my brethren, beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand note fast in the Lord, my beloved. 2   I beseech note Euodias, and I beseech Syntyche, to be of one mind in the Lord. 3   And I intreat thee also, true yoke-fellow, note help those women who laboured together with me in the gospel, with both Clement and my other fellow-labourers, whose names are in the book of life. 4   Rejoice in the Lord always: again, I say, rejoice. 5   Let your gentleness note be known to all men; the Lord is at

-- --

hand. 6   Be note careful for nothing, but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God:

7   And the peace of God, note which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8   Finally, note brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report: if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things: 9   Which also ye have learned note and received, and heard and seen in me; these do: and the God of peace shall be with you. 10   I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, note that now at last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful; but ye lacked opportunity. 11   Not that I speak in respect of want; for I have learned note in whatsoever state I am, to be content. 12   I know how to be abased, note

-- --

and I know how to abound, every where and in every thing I am instructed, both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to want. 13   I can do all things through Christ strengthening me. note 14   Nevertheless ye have done well, that ye did communicate to me in my affliction.

15   And ye know likewise, O Philippians, that in the beginning of the gospel, note when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated to me in respect of giving and receiving but you only. 16   For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again to my necessities. 17   Not that I desire note a gift, but I desire fruit that may abound to your account. 18   But I have all things, and abound: I am filled, having received of Epaphroditus the things which came from you, an odour of a sweet smell, note an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God. 19   And my God shall supply all your need, note according to his riches in glory through Christ Jesus. 20   Now unto our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. 21   Amen. Salute every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren who are with me salute you.

22   All the saints salute you, chiefly they that are of Cæsar's houshold.

23   The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
