Note return to page 1 Kemble first produced his version of THE TEMPEST, essentially the Davenant and Dryden version with some restorations from the original, at Drury Lane in 1789, and it reappeared, with further restorations from Shakespeare, after his move to Covent Garden in 1806, when he published this revised acting edition. This would remain the basis for stage productions of the play until Macready returned to Shakespeare's script in 1838.
