Note return to page 1 Lacy's brutal version of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, in which he himself played Sauny (Grumio, rewritten as a caricatured Scotsman), may have been acted as early as 1663, and was certainly in the repertory of the King's Company by 1667. Among many other alterations, it transfers the action of the play from Padua to London, thereby making it a better companion-piece to Fletcher's Anglicized sequel THE TAMER TAMED. It prove remarkably durable, and was last revived in 1736.
