Note return to page 1 Dryden's adaptation of TROILUS AND CRESSIDA, prefaced with a long explanation of its rationale and supplied with a prologue spoken by Shakespeare's ghost, simplifies Shakespeare's language, stagecraft and characterization alike, making Cressida a tragically misunderstood innocent who commits suicide under the pressure of Troilus's accusations. It held the stage from 1679 until 1734.
