Note return to page 1 Dennis's version of CORIOLANUS, like Nahum Tate's, was designed to comment on recent political history (in Dennis's case, the first unsuccessful Jacobite attempt to invade Britain in order to restore the banished Stuart monarchy, 1715), and like Tate's it failed to outlive its topical occasion, achieving three performances in 1719 but no revivals thereafter.
