INTRODUCTION.

THE THIRD PART OF KING HENRY VI. However commendable our Author might be in his desire of furnishing a Dramatic commemoration of such incidents and characters as are materially connected with the history of this island, yet we think him particularly unhappy in tracing the troubles and imbecilities of Henry the Sixth; for though he is very faithful and adequate in delineating personages, and correct in regard to facts, yet there is such an unavoidable sameness of incidents, such a want of matter in general to touch the tender passions, such a repetition of unentertaining, nay sometimes vulgar squabbles, amongst elevated characters, such repeated slaughters, and such a confused precipitancy of events, that these pieces cannot, with any great hope of success, be produced in action. In several places, it is true, the “Muse of fire” evidently breaks forth; and it is most certain no other author could have brought so much historical matter into the same compass, to so much and so great advantage.
