INTRODUCTION.

KING HENRY VIII. Shakespeare, by taking up so recent a piece of history as the subject of this play, at first view, seems to have entered on a critical hazardous undertaking; but if we consider that the reformation was then warm in the minds of the people, and perceive in how masterly a manner he has glossed over the character of Harry, still preserving his peculiarities, it appears not only safe but politic, to enter on such a theme. He has exerted himself uncommonly, to support the three principal characters, and we may venture to say, no other dramatic writer could have drawn the king, queen, and cardinal, with such forcible and chaste propriety.
